There is a high risk of rip currents for the beaches of south coastal South Carolina and north coastal Georgia through 8 PM this evening.
Large long period swell generated by major Hurricane Earl will impact the beaches of south coastal South Carolina and north coastal Georgia through tonight. This swell will create strong and potentially life-threatening rip currents. No one should enter the surf when there is a high risk for rip currents. An elevated risk for strong rip currents will continue through Friday.
A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6 am EDT Friday.
Long period swells will continue to impact the coast through tonight as Hurricane Earl passes well offshore. Breaker heights of 5 to 10 feet can be expected along the beaches of south coastal South Carolina and north coastal Georgia. Breakers of this magnitude will create extremely hazardous and dangerous conditions along the beaches. Large and powerful battering waves will also likely lead to moderate to severe beach erosion.
Locations particularly vulnerable to beach erosion include but are not limited to wild dunes... Folly Beach... Edisto Beach... Hunting Island... Fripp Island... Tybee Island... Saint Catherines Island and Sapelo Island.

A high risk for rip currents means that wind and wave conditions support particularly dangerous rip currents. During a high risk no one should enter the surf.
A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area... producing dangerous rip currents and beach erosion.
